Summer Nights

Summer Nights

Bright yellow moon on the velvet blue sky

With a star not far from its side

They tell of all the happy stories from the past

Women in the neighborhood gather in a porch

Children nudge to get their heads on their mother’s lap-

after a day of all play and carefree roam

Gossip and stories  keep them wide awake

Melodies from a radio drift through the air

Punctuated by a pause in the chatter for a favorite song

Gentle breeze touches the neem trees

And sings a lullaby to the gathered folks

An old man puts his cot on his porch

And a grandchild clambers onto the bed before the man

The old man fondly tousles the hair of the child

The day ends for the tired child dreaming about tomorrow
